Organizations and individuals can learn about using resources more efficiently, reducing waste, improving personal health, and finding and adding more value to their community at Sustainability 101 workshops, scheduled for Thursday, September 15. The free workshops are sponsored by West Virginia Sustainable Communities and are being held from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Charleston Area Alliance, located at 1116 Smith St.

Almost 50 citizens gather to learn about community development opportunities

Nearly 50 people gathered at the Thomas Education Center last Monday to learn about some community development assistance being offered to the city, and to discuss how citizens might join the city in efforts to improve Thomas.

The work session asked for ideas on how to create a more beautiful Thomas, and shined a spotlight on the opportunity to address the challenge presented by vacant and dilapidated buildings.

The U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced $95 million worth of funds to support sustainable local initiatives through the FY 2011 Regional Planning and Community Challenge Planning Grant Programs from HUD’s Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities.
