WV Pubcast news in response to the recent salmonella outbreak. The current national egg recall is expected to increase demand for locally produced eggs.
Many producers selling at local farmers markets, including the mom-and-pop egg producers, are seeing a major increase in demand. Since the outbreak apppeared on television, a number of people have opted for locally produced eggs.
Supporting local producers benefits not only the local producers but the entire community. Buying local cuts out the middleman and puts more money into the local economy as well as reduces the transportation cost. The reduced transportation needs also cuts down pollution and the waste of energy from the trucks hauling the food long distances.
When buying local, you know where the produce is coming from.
“We have a lot of people who have been brought in by the tourism industry who have settled here in Fayette County and I think sometimes there’s a disconnect between those folks and the local culture,” she said.
“The farmers market has created a place where people can talk to each other around something everyone understands, everybody loves food, it’s a common denominator,” Lyons stated.
