Building The Capacity Of West Virginia's Communities and Non-Profits

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Adds Harrison County to the WV Counties Served!

Thu, 05/27/2010 - 14:04
The nationally known non-profit organization Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is coming to Harrison County. Formed in 1996 in Dolly Parton’s home county in East Tennessee, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was launched to ensure all children have books to read regardless of their family’s income. Dolly decided to mail a brand-new, age appropriate book each month to every child under the age of 5 in her home county, Sevier. Every child experienced the excitement of receiving a new book each month. In the very last month before the child turns five, they receive the final book “Look out Kindergarten Here I Come.”
Five years later, Dolly decided to launch her foundation nationwide so that all children had such a significant opportunity. Now, Harrison County children will be a part of the hundreds of communities that are providing books to hundreds of thousands of children nationwide.
To become a part of the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a community must make the program accessible to all preschool children in the area. The community pays for the books and mailing, promotes the program, registers the children and enters the information into a database.
From that point, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library foundation takes over, manages the system and delivers books to the homes.
So do you live in Harrison County and do want your child to start receiving books? A child’s parent, grandparent or legal guardian must complete a registration form after the program launches in Harrison County. Remember, all children who live in Harrison County or any other participating county between the ages birth to five can participate! Currently, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is operating in over twenty counties in West Virginia. The counties include Barbour, Braxton, Brooke, Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge, Hancock, Lincoln, Marshall, Mason, McDowell, Mingo, Ohio, Roane, Summers, Tyler, Webster, Wetzel, Wirt and Wyoming.
On June 10 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. you and your family are invited to the Clarksburg City Park for an absolutely free event of fun for all ages!
