As most of you know, 2012 is an election year for the position of Commissioner of Agriculture in West Virginia. Gus Douglass, who has held the Commissioner position for the past 44 years, is retiring. The position oversees the operations of the WV Department of Agriculture. Five candidates are running in the Democratic primary on May 8, 2012. They are:

Joe Messineo

On March 3, WVFFC Program Manager Savanna Lyons delivered an update on the West Virginia Food Charter at the WV Small Farm Conference.  Conference attendees had a chance to respond to the draft action plan created at the recent Road Map for the Food Economy event.

The West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition partnered again with the West Virginia Farmers Market Association and the WV Small Farm Center to co-organize a track for farmers markets at the WV Small Farm Conference (March 1-3, 2012 in Morgantown).  We had a wonderful group of presenters.  The presentation materials from the Farmers Market Track are posted here.

The Specialty Crop Block Grant Program deadline is March 16, 2012.

The purpose of this program is to promote the increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, honey and other specialty products and to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops in West Virginia.

Over 100 West Virginians—from farmers, to food business owners, technical assistance providers, dieticians, and young future farmers—converged on January 23, to chart a course for bringing more local food from farm to table. The West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition and partners co-hosted the “Road Map for the Food Economy” daylong workshop in Bridgeport, WV.
